At Bryson, we believe that safety should be inclusive - the right fitted personal protective equipment (PPE) can transform how people work. Correctly fitted PPE ensures safety, improves confidence and dignity, and promotes performance on the job.

For far too long it's been one-size-fits-all and we're helping the construction industry move away from this outdated approach. That's why British Standards Institute (BSI) is encouraging everyone in the industry to take part in a landmark consultation. They are helping shape the first British Standard dedicated to inclusive PPE.

A Standard That Works for Everyone

The proposed standard aims to make PPE more inclusive and accessible to all, recognising that current designs often fail to accommodate the needs of women, people from ethnic or religious backgrounds, individuals with disabilities. The draft was co-authored by Katherine Evans, a mining geologist and founder of Bold as Brass, a network created to support women in heavy industry. Her mission is simple: create a standard that reflects the real-world diversity of the workforce.

Why It Matters

Inclusive PPE is not just a nice-to-have. Ill-fitting gear can:

  • Distract from safety
  • Increase risks
  • Causes short- and long-term health issues
  • Affect productivity and performance
  • Limit career progression
  • Undermine inclusion efforts on site

This new standard recognises those risks and calls for employers to consult their entire workforce about PPE needs.

The Reality On-Site

The lack of inclusive PPE is not just theoretical. In real-world construction environments, women and minority workers often have to compromise on comfort and safety:

  • Rolling up oversized trousers
  • Gloves slipping off due to large sizing>
  • Wearing multiple socks to fit into oversized boots
  • Poor helmet fit
  • Difficulty finding modest or culturally appropriate gear

Backed by trusted PPE partners like LEO Workwear, JSP, and Rockfall, Bryson is helping change the reality on site and how protective gear should be delivered - putting people first and making fit-for-purpose equipment accessible to everyone on site, the Bryson way.

Sandi Rhys Jones, former President of the Chartered Institute of Building, sums up the next steps the industry needs to take: "This is about keeping everybody safe and efficient in the workplace.
